Inspired by Northern Italian cuisine, Kuleto’s restaurant prides itself on serving the freshest, local ingredients and daily homemade specialties. Under the leadership of Chef Robert Helstrom, Kuleto’s has earned a reputation among San Francisco natives and visitors alike as an institution combining Italian culinary tradition, old San Francisco charm, and a dedication to fresh, artisan ingredients.

From a young age, Chef Helstrom had a passion for cooking. Inspired by his mother and family meals back home in Indiana, he got his first chefs job at 18. He moved to Southern California in the early 1980’s, where he worked in kitchens from Laguna Beach to Corona del Mar, finally settling in San Francisco in 1986. There, he opened the restaurant Corona Bar & Grill and, soon after was asked to be head chef at Kuleto’s.

His cooking philosophy centers around what he describes as “cooking from scratch”, a deeply held belief that homemade, carefully-crafted ingredients are the foundation of quality food. This standard is evident in Kuleto’s artisan breads which are baked daily, fresh pastas, cured meats and olives, cheeses and other in-house specialties.  By maintaining excellent relationships with local farmers and fisherman, Chef Helstrom and Kuleto’s celebrate the local produce and seasonal ingredients of the bay area while still maintaining the cultural traditions and flavors of Italy.
